Last week we celebrated pride and relief as we let go of a deeply orthodox and draconian law that was the Section 377. Proving that love is above all differences.
I believe this should stand true for all kinds of love and relationships too. Anybody can choose to be with anybody by their own free will. Regardless of and unabashed by the many rules set probably by cavemen centuries ago.
In Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ case, age has been a constant topic of discussion and argument against their otherwise adorable relationship. Their eleven year age gap has been trolled time and again on the internet, painting a picture of nothing but pure hypocrisy.
Although let’s get some facts straight here. Where were these geniuses when Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor decided to tie the knot? They too are exactly eleven years apart. Sources say that the first time Kareena met Saif, she was only a teen on the sets of a film he was shooting with Karishma Kapoor. But that’s cool. Cute even. Somehow the audience only gets hysterical when the age gap is the other way around.
There’s also Shahid Kapoor and Meera, Milind Soman and Ankita, and not forgetting my favourite, George Clooney and Amal! All of the above share massive age gaps but this isn’t frowned upon on the internet. Double standards alert.
Interestingly, I feel Bollywood has often acted as a taboo-fixer for the nation. If celebs go against a taboo, years later the society starts seeing the bigger picture and fixing a taboo too. Just like we follow celebrity fashion, we accept celebrity behaviour and somehow start following it.
For instance, alcohol consumption wasn’t routine for a regular Indian back in the day. Most religions even looked down upon people who overindulged in that habit, but eventually, it became a part of our everyday lifestyle, at least in metropolitan cities. So has clubbing and live-in relationships.
The same way, homosexuality has been openly accepted in Bollywood for quite some time now. Some of the biggest industry names have come out of the closet in one way or another. And now we finally see P.C. coursing through yet another taboo milestone.
Then again there’s nothing that could mildly bother #BossLady Priyanka Chopra and her vivacious climb towards the utmost fulfilment of life. To which all we have to say is – Priyanka for President!
Her wedding, we imagine, is going to the biggest crossover in the history of Hollywood & Bollywood. Her sister in law being Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark from the famed Game Of Thrones) makes us wonder if we’ll watch the cast mingling with the Khans and Kapoors of Btown! Best. Wedding. Ever. Oh, what I would give to attend this auspicious crossover!
So all I have to say is, if you’re one of the bigots on the internet spreading hate about this legendary relationship that is breaking a taboo, promising an immaculate wedding and bringing together the biggest film industries of the world, I hope you find another hobby and realise that this is the coolest time to be alive!
