In retrospect to all the superhit biofilms like Sanju, Padmaavat, Padman and Raazi in 2018, film-makers have a similar lineup for us this year. Inspirational biographies from present day and goosebump-inducing war films from an era long gone, make 2019 for an exciting year for Bollywood fans around the world.
On our radar we have Hrithik Roshan making a controversial comeback on the same day as his ex-girlfriend Kangana Ranaut. Fun! There’s also a rap-revolution film starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. While Akshay Kumar has two massive films this year, Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar have a surprise venture coming too. Curious? We’ll fill you in about all the deets right here!
Manikarnika – 25th January
Kangana Ranaut has been shooting for this magnum opus for over a year now and the trailer looks every bit appealing and promising. Known for playing strong roles, Kangana is the perfect fit for playing Rani of Jhansi who is a symbol of feminism in India. The first Bollywood war film based only on a female protagonist will be worth every penny.
This is also Kangana’s directorial debut in partnership with Telugu film director Krish. You go, girl!
Super 30 – 25th January
Releasing on the same day as Kangana’s Manikarnika is Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30. He plays the role of the legendary mathematician Anand Kumar who’s educational program of the same name gained popularity for Kumar’s unconventional style of teaching.
The film has been in the centre of controversy owing to its director Vikas Bahl who was called out as a sexual predator last year. This one’s sure lost a major part of its audience, let’s see how it goes!
Gully Boy – 14th February
If the trailer is any indication, this Ranveer Singh & Alia Bhatt starrer is on the verge of creating a major rap-revolution in our country! Based on the lives of rap stars Naezy and DIVINE, this film is bringing a raw story from the streets and gullies of Mumbai to the silver screens. The foot-tapping beats and intense trailer are proving to be a breath of fresh air from the typical masala movies, and boy, are we glad!
Can’t you tell this Zoya Akhtar movie is going to be EPIC?! Meanwhile, we just can’t stop saying “apna time aayega!” in every random conversation.
Kesari – 22nd March
This Akshay Kumar starrer will take you way back in time, precisely into the 19th century, as he plays the role of Havildar Ishar Singh who led his contingent of 21 Sikhs to resist an army attack of 10,000 Afghans during the British rule in India. True story. We feel goosebumps already, don’t you?
This tale of valour is based on true events and is directed by Anurag Singh and produced by Karan Johar. We’re ready.
Mission Mangal – 15th August
India was proud when ISRO’s spacecraft entered the orbit of Mars in 2014, Asia’s first country to do so and the world’s fourth! Mission Mangal is based on the genius women at ISRO, the rocket scientists who strived for this Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter) Mission to be a success. The star cast is what this movie even more exciting, we’re talking, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kriti Kulhari, Akshay Kumar and Sharman Joshi. What a rollercoaster(rocket) ride this will be!
Produced by Padman director R. Balki and director Jagan Shakti, we know this mission is in good hands.
Panipat – 6th December
After giving us movies like Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar, Ashutosh Gowariker is coming up with yet another class act based on the third Battle of Panipat. All we know so far is that it stars Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, but we’re sure Gowarikar will make the wait worthwhile!
The Sky Is Pink – TBD
A young girl, Aisha Chaudhary, had a lethal illness and no hopes to survive, yet she gave the world the hope of life and joy, with her awe-inspiring motivational talks at a raw age of only 17. Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Zaira Wasim are set to star in this inspiring story of a young girl who didn’t live a long life but lived it big.
Directed by Shonali Bose, the lady behind the critically acclaimed film Margarita with a Straw, along with producers Priyanka Chopra, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Ronnie Screwvala, this one’s sure going to be a compelling a watch.
